Ideal for auto or machine shop application, chain blocks are essential tools that allow you to lift extremely heavy objects such as machinery, engines or even a broken-down chassis. Thanks to their internal bearing mechanism and gear assembly, the tool allows you to lift a massive amount of weight. Made from high-strength alloy steel, chain blocks are very durable. Easy to use and necessary for many tasks, all commercial shops as well as versatile home shops should have a chain block.
Depending on the capacity, a chain block will be rated to support anywhere from a half tonne to twenty tonnes. For the average automotive shop, a two- or three-tonne chain block will suffice for most lifting jobs. The main use for a chain block is to lift out an engine from a vehicle, but the tool can be used to lift and/or suspend other heavy-duty components. Chain blocks may be statically placed or mounted to a runner. Running blocks are most likely found in larger shops.
Containing the bearing mechanism and the gear assembly, the block or body of the tool is relatively small and cylinder shaped. Attached to the top of the block is a drop-forged hook with safety latch. Connecting to a runner or some other fixture, this hook supports the block as well as what the block holds. From the bottom of the block, the load chain extends with a heavy-duty load hook attached. Whatever object is to be lifted or suspended, this hook attaches to it. Next to the load chain is the haul chain that is used to control the vertical motion of the load chain.
Chain blocks provide you with great mechanical advantage, allowing you to lift extremely heavy objects. With relatively little input force, you can move something weighing several tonnes. An asbestos-free brake mechanism lets you safely lower an object without the full weight of the object bearing down.

Because they only lift and lower vertically, chain blocks are somewhat limited. However, this is all they are really needed to do in an auto shop. In shops with the space and appropriate structural support, this tool makes a good alternative to an engine crane.
