2010 Yamaha YZF-R1 In Focus

In 2009 the Yamaha YZF-R1 revolutionized the literbike world by becoming the only production motorcycle that uses a new technology called a cross-plane crankshaft. Compared to the commonly used flat-plane crankshaft, the cross-plane crankshaft effectively eliminates inertial crankshaft torque fluctuations generated by the conventional flat-plane design.

In the flat-plane crankshaft, the connecting rod journals are spaced 90 degrees apart from each other instead of 180 degrees in a flat-plane. The R1’s engine comes with new forged aluminum pistons and titanium intake valves. The R1, as its predecessors, are equipped with the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) which delivers instant throttle response. The R1 also comes with the Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I), basically a variable air intake system that delivers optimum air/fuel ratio for maximum power and smooth throttle response. The Mikuni fuel-injection system is now equipped with new 12-hole injectors for greater fuel atomization, enhancing the combustion process.

In order to accommodate the R1’s new engine, a few changes are made on the aluminum frame. The new engine now sits slightly toward the front of the bike. The displaced center of gravity is compensated by a new fuel tank and a new lighter rear frame made of die-cast magnesium designed to promote the concentration of mass.

To smooth the R1’s ride is a SOQI fork with separate damping systems. The right fork handles rebound damping and the left handles compression damping. The adjustable SOQI rear shock offers high and low compression damping. As with the previous models, the R1 is equipped with a steering damper that engages when the handlebars waggle around too much.
The Yamaha YZF-R1’s crankshaft design probably is the greatest advancement to date in the motorcycle world. With its cross-plane crankshaft, a new level of mechanical efficiency is reached. Yamaha became the pioneers in implementing a technology so effective that it will be eventually harnessed by other OEMs.
